Podiatry
Podiatry is about ensuring people's feet are healthy and maintaining their independence. The main aim of the Taranaki DHB’s Podiatry Service is to prevent lower limb amputations caused by diabetes. Early and effective management of foot ulcers is crucial. People at risk of foot ulcers are regularly monitored and palliative foot care is provided. This service is provided free of charge however where items are supplied, such as orthoses (insoles) or foot products there will be a charge to the patient.
Podiatry treatments cover diabetic foot check ups, removal of corns and callus and a nail cutting service. Foot and lower limb pain is treated with orthoses (insoles) where appropriate. Advice about managing diabetes in relation to foot health and footwear is also provided.
The podiatry service is currently provided by private podiatrists within the Taranaki district.

Referrals are accepted from GPs, specialist consultants, hospital departments and community agencies. Self referrals are accepted from people who have previously had treatment from the Podiatry Service.
Referrals are prioritised by the hospital. Once your need is prioritised, you will be sent a voucher which enables you to book an appointment for hospital-funded podiatry treatments from one of our contracted podiatrists. You are welcome to take support people with you.
How you can help us
- Arrive at the podiatrist’s practice in plenty of time.
- Take the hospital voucher and referral letter (if applicable) and a list of your current medication with you. All conditions may affect your podiatry treatment so never assume other diseases or illnesses are not relevant.
- Please remove toe nail polish before your appointment.
