Taranaki DHB's Maternity Unit is a Base Secondary and Primary birthing unit, providing care for New Plymouth women and those transferred from other hospitals throughout the region.

The Labour Ward provides both pre labour and labour care and consists of six birthing rooms and six antenatal beds. The Post Natal ward consists of 18 to 21 beds.

There are 1200 to 1300 births per year. Four obstetricians provide secondary care for the Unit as well as some taking primary cases. Hospital Midwives provide the midwifery care for the Obstetricians, midwifery care for secondary cases, post natal care and community follow up.

The Labour Ward is staffed with two midwives per shift and one midwife 'on call' over night. The Post Natal ward is staffed with mainly midwives, with some registered nurses, enrolled nurses and obstetric nurses. Both wards are supported by health care assistants (HCAs).

The average length of stay for a normal birth is 72 hours, and for a Caesarian birth, 4 to 5 days. A Community Midwife provides follow up care in the home, from discharge for up to six weeks postpartum, with the average number of visits being five. The baby is then transferred to a Well Child provider of the mother's choice.

Independent Midwives provide maternity care for women in Taranaki and run their own practise, having a contract with Taranaki DHB to use the facility. Referrals and consultations are made by the Independent Midwives to the Obstetricians and depending on the outcome a decision is made whether women remain under primary care or transferred to secondary care.

The facility is open 24-hours-a-day and experienced staff are available at all times for any enquiries.
